MNIT MDE manages the technical functions critical to managing public education in Minnesota; supporting systems including funding disbursement and large-scale, public-facing school performance data reporting. 

Job Summary

As a Senior Software Cloud Engineer, you will provide expert technical engineering support contributing to the digital transformation of State services in public and private cloud environments. This Senior Software Cloud Engineer will lead the design and implementation of cloud technology solutions for strategic projects and initiative

This position is responsible for planning, designing, implementing, and recommending services to support MNIT cloud strategies including:

  • Providing Subject Matter Expertise (SME) for MNIT MDE hybrid cloud environment engineering and automation
  • Optimizing MNIT Services’ cloud infrastructure.
  • Recommending, designing, and implementing standardized cloud technology solutions.
  • Administering complex cloud services and environments.
  • Serving as technical advisor and mentor to less experienced Information Technology Specialists (ITS).
  • Coordinating the development of MNIT standards and policies to ensure proper configurations and operations.
  • Delivering strategic solutions.

This position is currently eligible for full-time telework: 

  • Telework for Minnesota IT Services allows an employee to perform work from a telework location and an employee may be required to be in the office based on business needs and other dependencies in Minneapolis, Minnesota. 
  • Only candidates located in Minnesota and bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin) are telework eligible. 


Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must clearly demonstrate all of the following qualifications in their resume: 

Position requires a minimum of five (5) year of IT related experience with Cloud base application development, cloud workflow and automation, cloud-based application deployment and administration.

Experience must include:

  • Java Full-stack application development including Azure, DevOps, Git or GitHub or GitLab, and Docker. 
  • Virtualization solutions for both Public and Private Clouds, such as Azure, Hyper-V, or VMWare.
  • Designing and implementing Cloud IaaS and PaaS Services on Linux and Windows operating systems.
  • Scripting in Python and/or PowerShell.
  • Leveraging development pipelines, DevOps philosophies, and working with infrastructure-as-code.

A master’s degree in Information Technology or an IT related field substitutes for three (3) years of experience, OR an IT related bachelor’s degree substitutes for two (2) years, OR an IT related associate’s degree substitutes for one (1) year. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Sophisticated troubleshooting ability, including the ability to create and test hypotheses based on relative likelihood and a willingness and ability to creatively consider all possible causes for a problem and test appropriately.
  • Experience with cloud Monitoring and Alerting Solutions, such as Azure Monitor, SCOM, Solarwinds, or others.
  • Experience with Jenkins, Docker, Sonatype Nexus Repository, Veracode Scanning, or others.
  • Experience with Backup and Disaster Recovery Solutions, such as Azure Site Recovery, Azure Backup, System Center Data Protection Manager, CommVault, Veeam, or others.
  • Experience with Azure Resource Manager.
  • Experience with CI/CD Azure DevOps (ADO) or similar cloud technology or Jenkins (on-prem) and its integration with Git and GitHub Advanced security or Veracode or similar tools.
  • Experience with end-to-end automation for all builds, tests, and deployments from scratch.
  • Experience writing IaC (Infrastructure as a Code) to deploy infrastructure resources through Bicep code etc. and provisioning infrastructure.
