Music is abstract and intangible — yet our minds experience it as powerfully and directly as a concrete object. There is perhaps no shorter path from math to emotion. The emotional side of that path is hard to verbalize, but there’s a lot we can say about the math! This talk is a brief introduction to the patterns that emerge in music, and how they arise out of the physics of sound and our perception of it. No musical training and no advanced math skills required! You’ll be fine so long as some basic algebra won’t freak you out. The talk will feature musical examples from a wide variety of genres, including some of my own recordings.
