SUMMARY:MN VR and HCI Apr 2026: Mastering Space & Time
DESCRIPTION:MN VR and HCI monthly meeting for April 2026: David Mann – SpacetimeDB and XREAL One Pro SDK\n\n\nSpacetimeDB is a new approach to scalable networking for both VR and general game projects. Bonus quick overview of the XREAL One Pro glasses SDK. \n \nMastering Space & Time – David Mann \nUsing Dungeonpunk Online as the case study\, David Mann will walk through the multiplayer architecture he has been building\, with a focus on how SpacetimeDB\, Unity\, modern authentication flows\, and live simulation fit together in practice. As part of that work\, he built dungeonpunk.dev\, a custom authorization portal created out of necessity to handle identity\, token exchange\, and secure game connectivity. The talk focuses on the design decisions\, integration challenges\, and tradeoffs involved in keeping the overall system simple\, maintainable\, and realistic to operate as a team of one. \nThe presentation will also include a short addendum on the XREAL One Pro glasses\, covering what David found while attempting to integrate them into a real game project. It will examine the current state of the tooling\, the developer ecosystem\, and the practical realities. \nDavid Mann is an independent developer and craftsman of fine technology with experience across games\, web development\, DevOps\, VR\, and real-time multiplayer systems. He uses that broad skill set to build custom systems spanning product\, infrastructure\, and operations. \n \nSchedule: \n\n6:30 Social and setup\n7:00 Kickoff / announcements\n7:15 David Mann\n~8:45 Tear-down\, cross the sidewalk to Yardhouse\n\n \nAttending and Parking: \nThis event will be in person at the REM5 STUDIOS new office in West End and the presentation will be streamed live at https://www.youtube.com/igdatc \nPark underground and take the central red elevator to ground level\, then cross the sidewalk. SUMMARY:MN VR and HCI Jan 20216: Display Glasses
DESCRIPTION:MN VR and HCI monthly meeting for January 2026: Display Glasses overview and demos\n\n\nAnother 50/50 split of presentation and hardware demos. Check the demo and parking details below! \n \nSmart Glasses Overview and Display Glasses in Depth – David Mann and Zach Wendt \nWith the recent debut of consumer smart glasses that look fairly normal\, descriptors like AR are getting butchered worse than ever. We’ll do a quick overview of the different tech and capabilities\, then a deep dive on “display glasses” that focus on image quality\, and demos of the two most popular brands. \n\nStrengths/weaknesses of different optics\, displays\, power and compute\nChoosing tradeoffs for your use cases\nWhat’s coming in 2025\, including adjacent VR/MR tech\nDeep dive on Xreal and Viture display glasses – the most mature/popular category\nDeveloper options\, and “tinkerer” options with no coding\n\n \nDisplay Glasses Demos – Xreal One Pro and Viture Luma Pro \nWe’ll be demoing the most feature rich\, and the clearest/brightest display glasses available\, so you can go eyes-in yourself. You should be pleasantly surprised at the current quality of affordable micro OLED and optics. You might hit an ergonomic issue – look up your IPD if you can (we have two sizes) and wear contacts if you own them (but one pair of glasses can adjust up to -4 diopters for near-sightedness.) \n \nSchedule: \n\n6:30 Social and setup\n7:00 Kickoff / announcements\n7:15 David and Zach\n7:52 Demos\n~8:30 Tear-down\, cross the sidewalk to Yardhouse\n\n \nAttending and Parking: \nThis event will be in person at the REM5 STUDIOS new office in West End and the presentation will be streamed live at https://www.youtube.com/igdatc \nPark underground and take the central red elevator to ground level\, then cross the sidewalk. SUMMARY:MN VR and HCI Oct 2025: Gaussian Splatting
DESCRIPTION:MN VR and HCI monthly meeting for October 2025: Gaussian Splatting and VR demos of Meta Hyperscape\n\n\nOur last meeting of 2025 will be about 50/50 presentation and VR demos of Hyperscape and Gracia. \n \nIntro to Gaussian Splatting – Zach Wendt \nGaussian Splatting (GS) is a great way to render detailed real world scenes and polygon unfriendly content like plants\, fences and hair on low power GPUs like Quest and phones. They’re also scalable to huge data sets and degrade in a pleasant DOF/impressionistic way when the viewer gets too close or moves to an unscanned area. (Pictured on purpose so it doesn’t just look like a photo.) \nMy brief intro will cover: \n\nGS pros\, cons\, history and why it effectively replaced NeRFs for real-time\nSuper quickstart using Hyperscape Capture on Quest 3/3S\nCapture tips for good automated results or in tough environments\nPointers to dev tools and OS projects for Web\, Unity\, Unreal and Blender\nActive areas of research and eye candy\n\n \nQuest demos of Hyperscape and Gracia – Amir\, Zach\, Paul and You! \nMeta just put OS 81 into general release last week\, which lets all Quest 3 & 3S owners try Hyperscape Capture for themselves. This is by far the fastest and easiest way to capture a high quality radiance field of an environment and move around inside it in VR. This gives extremely strong immersion that will have you (gently) bumping into IRL walls\, furniture\, pets and children. \nIf you make a good one\, bring your headset (no file sharing yet)\, or share your experience at the meeting. \nFor everyone that doesn’t have a Quest 3 or 3S\, we’ll be devoting about half of the meeting to demos of Hyperscape and Gracia (the king of on-device VR rendering and animated gaussian splats.) \n \nSchedule: \n\n6:30 Social and setup\n7:00 Kickoff / announcements\n7:15 Zach\n7:52 Demos\n~8:30 Tear-down\, cross the sidewalk to Yardhouse\n\n \nAttending: \nThis event will be in person at the REM5 STUDIOS new office in West End only \nPark underground and take the central red elevator to ground level\, then cross the sidewalk. Try Spiders for free on Quest. \n \nAWE and WWDC recap – Amir Berenjian and Zach Wendt \nWe’ll also have a quick overview of going to Augmented World Expo by Amir (live or by proxy) and AR/VR announcements from Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference by Zach.
