MN VR and HCI May 2025: Quest 3 MR For Reals

May 28 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm CDT

MN VR and HCI monthly meeting for May 2025: Quest 3 MR For Reals

Quest 3 MR For Reals – Zach Wendt

Quest has steadily gained MR/AR features over the last year, and now has nearly the full feature set of Apple Vision Pro / HoloLens. Even without the full performance of those $4k headsets, this allows for some genuine MR/AR experiences (unlike the past era of background passthrough in a pre-scanned room.)

This example-heavy overview will cover:

  • The new Quest camera access API – capabilities, limitations, great developer prototypes, and what’s in the Quest store so far
  • The Boundary APIs and recent OS changes around boundaries
  • Depth API and MRUK updates for real-world raycasting
  • Devs using the Depth API as a workaround for (not yet released) continuous world mesh scanning
  • A quick overview of the new and improved options for sharing spatial anchors
  • Bonus: Quick summary of what was/wasn’t revealed about Android XR at Google I/O

Schedule:

  • 6:30 Social and setup
  • 7:00 Kickoff / announcements
  • 7:15 Zach Wendt
  • ~8:30 Tear-down, cross the sidewalk to Yardhouse

Attending:

This event will be in person at the REM5 STUDIOS new office in West End, and live streamed on https://www.youtube.com/igdatc

Park underground and take the central red elevator to ground level, then cross the outdoor walkway. REM5 STUDIOS is across the sidewalk from Yardhouse. Map below.
