About the Event:

The Goldstein Museum of Design invites you to a public program in connection with our current exhibition Old Type, New Ways.

This panel discussion will include faculty advisor Bill Moran, Hamilton director emeritus Jim Moran, and Hamilton’s current program officer Stephanie Carpenter.

Bill is a 3rd-generation letterpress printer, graphic designer and professor of printing history at the University of Minnesota. Beginning in 2001 he volunteered for Hamilton in a variety of roles including the writing and publishing of the book “Hamilton Wood Type, A History in Headlines.” As Artistic Director, then Partnerships & Development Officer, Bill has been responsible for many artistic projects, exciting partnerships, and dynamic fundraising for the museum.

Naturally, Jim Moran is also a third generation printer and was owner of Moran’s Printing in Green Bay, where he worked for 29 years. He was Hamilton’s Director for 10 years and was Master Printer and Collection Manager for 5 years, maintaining the Museum’s equipment, library and archives. He retired in 2023 but continues to volunteer at Hamilton.

Stephanie Carpenter is a letterpress printer, educator, and graphic designer. Since 2011 she has worked at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum. Stephanie enjoys the tactile nature of letterpress printing and the direct connection to history. She creates posters, installations, and artists’ books using vintage wood and metal type and hand-carved blocks on 100-year-old-presses.
