The MNIT MDH team provides services for over 250+ applications and delivers the information technology to drive one of the leading public health systems in the nation. You will support an agency that works to protect, maintain, and improve the health of all Minnesotans.

Job Summary

As a GIS Developer with Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), you will provide Geographic Information System (GIS) services to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), and support and training to business areas, projects and users. You will assist them in their use of the GIS technology, so they can provide spatial analysis, develop and support data, maps, products and GIS applications. You will assist IT staff with the development and maintenance of GIS data, end-user applications and tools, interactive mapping web sites, and documentation of GIS data layers. As a GIS Developer you will also conduct GIS programming and documentation tasks related to the GIS application and data development, spatial analysis, database management and map production activities. You will also fill special requests from throughout the MDH for maps and GIS data products. All while ensuring that all documentation and enterprise standards development will be designed to enable the MDH staff to be self-sufficient in gaining access to geographic information and products.

 

This position is currently eligible for full-time telework:

  • Telework for Minnesota IT Services allows an employee to perform work from a telework location and an employee may be required to be in the office based on business needs and other dependencies in St. Paul, Minnesota.
  • Only candidates located in Minnesota and bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin) are telework eligible.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Position requires a minimum of two (2) years of work experience in an IT related field, with a focus on geography, GIS, or a related science.

Experience must include:

  • Basic programming and Python script experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Esri product suite, including ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise and their associated API’s or interfaces.
  • Familiarity with web publishing and geographic terminology, coordinate systems, map projections, map-based analysis, and principles of cartography.
  • Ability to deliver effective verbal or written messages that facilitate a mutual understanding on both parties.
  • Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem-solving.

A bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or a related field substitutes for two (2) years of experience, OR a related associate’s degree substitutes for one (1) year.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher education coursework in Geography, GIS, and related science.
  • Strong working knowledge of development tools such as: HTML,.NET, C#, JavaScript and Python.
  • Strong working knowledge and experience with geocoding and spatial analysis.
  • Programming languages and application development tools experience, including SQL, .NET framework, and C# or Visual Basic.
  • Experience working as part of a team on GIS projects.
